1. Beaches
I don't know about you but when I think Spain I think beaches and Salou definitely did not disappoint. As you approach the main promenade you can see the beach stretching along the coast and far as the eye can see. Sun loungers are available to rent from the various beach bars and vendors for about 5 euros each, which isn’t too pricey. Although we preferred to just chill out there were plenty of water activities and water sports equipment available for use and hire so there is definitely something for everyone.
As I mentioned in my previous post, you definitely won’t be short of places to eat in Salou with a strip packed full of bars and restaurants, many of which serve food well into the early hours of the morning. One of my personal favourites was Koko Beach club, I came across them during my pre-holiday look around and found they were taking bookings for sunset dinners. I sent them a quick message and they reserved us a table for our anniversary (6 years!!!) in the perfect position to watch the sunset. For 25 euros each we got a glass of prosecco each, a sharing Coronita cocktail and a main course which was all amazing, and I can’t forget to mention the lovely staff and owner. I would definitely recommend this bar if you’re looking for somewhere away from the hustle and bustle on the main strip for good drinks, food and amazing sunset views.
3. Boat Tour
Be sure to make use of in resort staff if you have them, ours were amazing and helped us book a half day boat trip with lunch and unlimited drinks for 37 euros #winning. Boat tours in Salou start from about 20 euro’s depending on the length of the boat trip and what’s included. We had to take a short coach journey to Cambrils where we hopped on the boat and sailed along the coastline of Salou before dropping anchor to enjoy some ocean swimming, for the less confident swimmers they provide life jackets).
4. Aquapolis Water Park
Once again the in resort Jet2 rep was super helpful and helped us choose which waterpark to go to as there are two choices (there are definitely worse holiday problems to have) and the rep recommended Aquapolis. It’s easily reached by a 15-20 minute bus journey and you can catch the bus on the main road. I would definitely recommend queue jump tickets as we spent a long time queuing for the rides but overall we enjoyed ourselves and a dolphin show is included.
5. Day trip to Barcelona
This is probably the thing I was most looking forward to, Salou is just a one hour train journey away from Barcelona and with a return ticket costing 17.60 you almost have to go. I will warn you the walk from the main resort of Salou to the station is about 20mins at a brisk pace so you probably won’t want to attempt it once it start to get really hot.
Now 6 hours sounds like a long time but after you throw in navigating the metro and stopping to look around and take pictures, that really isn’t much time at all. However we did manage to visit 3 major points of interest:
Camp Nou – according to my other half you can’t go to Barcelona without visiting Camp Nou, whilst I disagree he was in charge of planning the day and so Camp Nou was the first stop of the day. You can pay 25 euros for the full tour or just soak up the atmosphere from outside, there are also a few scattered around the grounds.
Sagrada Familia – this was the 2nd stop our whirlwind tour and a surpisingly quick one since we didn’t go inside but it is breathtaking to see up close, definitely worth a visit even if your short on time
Park Guell – the 3rd and final stop on our tour, also the most exhausting since we had to climb up what I can only describe as an urban Mount Everest to actually get to the entrance of the park. Only to find out that we weren’t at the main entrance so had to do what felt like a cross country to get to the other side of the park. Over exertion aside the view from the top of Park Guell really is amazing, unfortunately we weren’t able to spend much time exploring the rest of the park as we had to rush off and catch our train.
6. Tourist train
When I saw this cute little train driving around the resort I had to give it a try, I’ve since found out that quite a resorts have tourist trains like these. The tourist train in Salou has two lines, a green and a yellow, which take slightly different routes, we chose the yellow line simply because it turned up first. Both lines cost 6 euros with the yellow line tour lasting 40 minutes and the green lasting about 1 hour 20 minutes. It’s a cute way to see more of the resort, they also provide an audio tour in different languages.
7. Fountain Show
There are two fountain shows in Salou, the illuminated fountain at Francesc Germà square and the cybernetic fountain at Jaume I promenade near the port, check before you go as the times for these do change seasonally.
